SERVICE LEARNING STUDENT LEADERSHIP
The Student Leadership in Service Learning Program (SL2) is one of the most integral programs of the Service Learning Institute. The SL2 Program plays an important role in creating peer to peer mentorship for CSUMB students engaging in service learning courses. Service Learning Student Leaders support students, faculty and community partners in connecting concepts within the Service Learning courses to the service activities performed by students at community partner sites. This helps facilitate the development of a community motivated for social change.
The Student Leadership in Service Learning (sl)2 Program employs students with prior CSUMB service learning experience to assume leadership roles in the implementation of CSUMB’s service learning mission. Service Learning Student Leaders (SL2s) provide valuable support for all three constituencies in the service learning process: faculty, community partners and students.
The co-teaching and peer mentoring model that the (sl)2 Program pioneered has been very effective in helping students examine the highly charged issues related to diversity and social justice that they encounter through service learning.
Additionally, the (sl)2 Program continues to succeed in helping SL2s develop their own commitments to social justice and diversity on campus and in the community. Graduates of the program are known to have gone on to pursue careers in public service and social justice related fields.
